Day 12: Matthew 6:1~4

Giving to the Needy
1"Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.  2"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 3But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

  1. God really knows how we works. Of course, He is our designer and creator.

Man is so corruptible that if we help the needy before the eyes of our fellow men we will become vulnerable to the sin of pride. Maybe we started in well-meaning way, but after we exposed our good acts we become vulnerable to pride; instead honoring God, we tend to honor ourselves.

The best way to avoid this is to do your good acts in secret. To remain humble and keep your feet where they should be is not a easy task. It calls for an act of will and a dose of help from God. It is not impossible though because Jesus modeled it.
